Working Group: Ethnography/Critical Realism

Call for Applications

Professor Claire Decoteau of Chicago Department of Sociology invites applications for Working Group on Ethnography and Critical Realism in January, 2016 in Chicago, Illinois. The Working Group will explore the following questions. Is critical realism a useful approach to ethnographic discovery and explanation? What might critical realism lend in terms causal explanations in ethnography? Does it help us to link the macro and the micro? Does it help us to uncover invisible structural forces, as well as elucidate internal motivations for action? And if so, how does it compare to other ethnographic approaches?

Eligibility: We are looking for early career academics who have completed their PhD within the past 10 years.

Application Deadline: The application deadline for the working group is October 1, 2015. Participants will be notified of their acceptance by October 15, 2015.

Application Instructions: Please click on the link to submit your application (http://sociology.yale.edu/ethnography-and-critical-realism-working-group) Each application should contain a) an updated CV; b) a 2,000-word letter of interest summarizing your how you think this working group might influence your ongoing work; c) a one paper (published or in progress) that illustrates your substantive, theoretical and or methodological areas of interest that could be shaped by participating in this working group.

Dates and Location: The three working group meetings will take place in January 2016, June 2016, and January 2017. Exact locations and dates will be determined later though the first meeting will likely take place in Chicago.

An honorarium will be provided for the participants’ contribution and participation. Preference will be given to US-based sociologists who have received their PhD in the last 10 years.
